My friend's brother gets his due

By Rosemary Brown

My best friends name was Rosemary. So that made two Rosemary's in the same grade at school. One of the teachers said we needed to make up our mind if we wanted to be called Rose or Rosemary to make it easier for her to differentiate between the two. So my friend said she wanted to have her name as two names. That was alright with me so she became Rose Mary and I stayed with the name Rosemary. I don't know that it made that much difference because everyone else just called us both Rosemary.

Our favorite seat on the school bus was the middle seat right up front and right behind the bus driver. This bus had kinda square body with a row of seats down the middle and a bench type seat along each side. For some reason our favorite seat did not have a back like the rest of them. Now Rose's brother and his friend for some reason (I don't know what) started sitting right behind us . When we would get going down the road they'd reach over and pull my hair, just little yanks, it was very annoying. I didn't think too much about it the first day but then the next day the same thing. I was thinking how can I put a stop to this? So one day we were about half way home when "Emmit" reached over and yanked on my hair. That did It I turn around and hit him over the head with my dinner pail. I tried to get in a couple more whacks but he was holding my arm.

Suddenly the driver stopped the bus and I turn around real quick and sat down in my seat. I knew I was in real trouble. Once before he had made a kid get off and walk home for fighting on the bus. I could just see my self walking the rest of the way home. Instead He said "Now Rose you prove this."

I said "Well he was pulling my hair." I don't remember what he said after that but I did not have to walk home and that was all I was concerned about at the time.

Once after that another older fellow thought he would try it so he sat down in the seat behind us and when he thought no one was looking (I guess that's what he thought) he would reach up and pull my hair. Well I was doing a lot of thinking how can I stop this? I think I got an answer. So the next time he did that I just simple leaned back and rested my head in his lap. I thought "old boy I'm going to embarrass you so badly you won't ever want to do that again" and it worked. His sister said you know how to make him quite that don't you? I didn't have any trouble with them after that.

But one day the Bus driver came to visit with my Dad and I got scared. I was thinking "O Boy he has come to tell Pop and I'm in big trouble." Instead I heard him telling pop all about it like I was some kind of hero or something and they both got a big laugh out of it.
