Gladys: Safe in The Arms of Jesus

By Rosemary Brown

After writing about the cold hard winter of 1935-36 I thought of all the perils a child goes through. After my little Sister Gladys died in July 1934 (she was just about 7 months old then), at her funeral Chris Razor's girls sang Safe in the Arms of Jesus and a couple of other songs. Their harmony was so beautiful. This is what they sang:

(written by Fannie J. Crosby and W. H. Doane).

Safe in the arms of Jesus Safe on his gentle breast,There by his love o'er shaded
sweetly my soul shall rest.
Hark! tis the voice of angels, borne in a song to me ,... over the fields of glory
Over the jasper sea.

Chorus: Safe in the arms of Jesus, Safe on his gentle breast
There by his love oe'r shaded, Sweetly my soul shall rest

Safe in the arms of Jesus Safe from corroding care Safe from the worlds temptations
Sin cannot harm me there, Free from the blight of sorrow Free from my doubts and fears
Only few more trials, only a few more tears

Jesus my heart's dearest refuge Jesus has died for me Firm on the rock of ages
Ever my trust shall be, Here let me wait with patience Wait til the night is oer
Wait til I see the morning, Break on that golden shore.

Chris Razor had a large family of girls and maybe one boy and they lived near Springport Indiana. One time we were invited to a christmas party at there house. That was the first time I remember seeing a Christmas Tree. They had it decorated with candles which I think they lit at night. I was a very small child then ,but I remember thinking that must be very dangerous.

I remember our family attending a square dance at their house back then my Dad was their fiddle player. I remember hearing them tell my Dad "Ikey you've got to come and play the fiddle for us we can't have a square dance without you."
