Death at the door

By Rosemary Brown

The lightning flashed the thunder cracked and rolled. the rain came down like in buckets and Mamma screamed "No!!!And I was saved from the horses hoofs.

It was another Saturday
evening and as usual we were at Grandma's house. The men had gone to town,
at home was the children including my brothers and I and our cousins, also
the women folk which included Grandma , Aunt Ella , Momma and Aunt Virgie.
In the same front yard where later Grandma Fell on the ice
and broke her arm,
, and where Mother and
Grandma carried my Sister Glady until she died in their arms
this is where two horses were penned in side the
yard. Also my Uncles had two homing pigeons tethered on long strings on
the ground in front of the porch. We were out on the porch because it was
too warm in the house when one of these summer storms came up. The horses
were afraid of the lightning and thunder. They ran wildly from one fence to
another trying to get out to no avail. So they came up to the porch where
the pigeons were tied. The pigeons were afraid of the horses so they
started fluttering about trying desparately to get loose. That scared the
horses even more, so they started rearing even more bringing their hoofs
down on the pigeons, failing at first, but they didn't stop until the pigeons
were dead. In the process I thought I had to save the Pigeons. I had that
big ole lump in my throat that hurt so badly in times like this. So I
started down the porch steps. I was going to loose the pigeons. That's
when Mother Screamed "No!" That got my attention so I stopped for a moment
and then she said , "Let them go, you're going to get your self killed. She
was so right. They were so scared they probably would have killed me too.
There are some things that happen while one is still a child that really
make an impact on your life. I think for me that was one of them.
