After a long night, we get a surpriseI went back "over on the hill" and went to bed . At 5 A.M. Aunt Virgie came back with the report that Mary (my mother) not only had one baby but she had twins. I got up then and went back home. And there were two little babies lying on two chairs with pillows under each baby . they were close to the Wilson Heater to keep them warm , also covered with blankets. Mom and Pop said we named the little girl Ada but we don't know what to call the little boy yet. At about 7:30 A.M. when we got on the school bus we were so excited thinking we were going to be th first to tell the good news , but that didn't happen , our cousins Dorothy and Lucille had already "stole our thunder " and when we got on one of the girls Mildred screamed "you have new babies at your house." Next question was "What's there name's?" I said the little girl's name is "Ada" but we can't figure out what to call the little boy. Now Andy H. was somewhat like "Dennis the Menace." So he said , "Why don't you call him Potato?" We name them Wendell and Ada
The twins were born on election day very early in the morning. Pop and Mom knew that they wanted to name the little girl Ada .
.....and they wanted to name the little boy after whom they thought would be the next president of the United States of America. However the election had not taken place yet , so there fore they did not want everybbody to know that the Baby's name was Wendell Wilkie White. they were so sure that he would win the election that they went ahead and named him that. We all know now that Wendell Wilkie did not win the election . I kind of think the doctor had something to do with that decision. When I was born they couldn't decide between Ella Mae or Eliza Jane. Rosemary Clooney had become a popular singer at that time , so Dr. Marshall said "Why don't you just name her "Rosemary" ?" I've always been kinda glad that the Doc said that because that's why they named me Rosemary. My dear little Sister AdaMy dear little sister Ada was not fully developed and therefore she cried for all the two weeks of her very short life except for very short periods of time like maybe five minutes at a time. After we put her in the hospital I remember hearing her cry the moment we entered the front door when we went to visit. We buried her at the foot of Gladys' grave. Just the family was there except mother and I remember looking out across the rolling terrain and hearing the sad bleat of the sheep in the pasture nearby and hearing the cars zing down hi-way three to west of us. I had lost another sister. |
