What's wrong with momma? One night while I was snuggling under the covers and listening to the wind out side... I was thinking how glad I was to be in a nice warm bed. And I actually thought I sure would hate to have to get out in this tonight. Then Pop came thru the door sounding very urgent he said "Rose get up and go over on the "Hill" and get Virgie , your mother is sick and Maam doesn't want to be the only woman here when the doctor comes." Pop had already gone to the neighbors house to call for the doctor and come back home. My first thoughts were why me? How come the boys never have to go on these errands ? Pop wash telling me to hurry, so I got up and started. Mother was in the front room. MOther and Dad always slept in the bed in the front room becauise that's where the heating stove was and it was warmer that way in the cold months of the year. However as I went thru the front room I heard my mother screaming and moaning and I thought she was dying. Then I didn't mind at all. Anything to be helpful . When I got outside it was very dark and there was a mist of rain which I hardly noticed in my urgency. I went down our hill to the road then down another hill to the level part of the road then thru the gate then down the lane and up the hill to Grandma's house. I knocked on the door and Uncle Lacy came to the door. I could here UNcle Ted and Aunt Virgie in side asking "who is it?' " Uncle Lacy said "it's Rose." then he asked "What's the matter Rose .?" and I started to cry. I said "I think Mama's dying." and Maam wants Virgie to come over to be with her when the doctor gets there." I felt much better when Uncle Lacy started to laugh and he said "No, your mother isn't dying , she's having a Baby," Then he said" come on in here and go to bed." "Virgie can go on over there." Aunt Virgie's reply to that was "No indeedy, I'm not going over there by myself. She'll have to go with me. and I am not going without a light." So some one got us a lantern and lit it for us and the both of us went back to our house. I have to say my heart was much lighter on the way back. So, when we got back to our house, Pop met us at the door and said "Rose, get back over on the hill." I didn't mind at all and I went back by myself. (that was because he didn't want me to come thru the room where mother was.) |
