A man by the name of Charles P. Jones felt inspired to write a song entitled " I Would Not Be Denied." I'm sure he was thinking of Jacob in the Bible at the time.
Jacob was ...could we say, scared to death, shaking in his boots... unsure what was ahead of him for good reason. Twenty years before he had used deceit and trickery to cheat his brother out of his birthright and a special blessing. Fearing for his life he had run away from home, been deceived and tricked by his father-in-law into marrying a wife he did not love, had to work for her for seven years and then seven more years for his true love. By this time he had become a very wealthy man with a large family, and then decided that it was time to go back to his father's house
Traveling with his family and many servants and herds of sheep and cattle was not easy. Then one of the servants who had gone ahead to check out the territory , came back and said that Esau, the brother he had wronged was coming to meet him. No wonder he was scared. So he prepared many gifts as a peace offering to Esau and sent them on ahead. Then he sent the livestock with the servants and last of all his family across the river, but Jacob himself stayed there on the other side
Now I've heard it said that Jocob prayed all night, and that he wrestled with an angel. But my Bible says he wrestled with a man and the next morning he said, " I have seen God face to face and lived." During that night the man said "Let me go." and Jacob said " I will not let you go until you bless me," ---Thus the thought " I Would Not Be Denied."
Jacob's name was changed from Jacob to Israel. The twelve tribes of Israel were named for Jacob's children. So don't give up on prayer, God forgives the vilest of sinners. When they met, Esau was so glad to see Jacob that all was forgiven.
" I Would Not Be Denied." was the first song I remember learning all the words too at church. By this time Grandpa Reeves had died and
Grandma Liza and Aunt Ella Mae had moved back to Kentucky and "the house on the hill" was left to Uncle Ted and Aunt Virgie and their children. So one day there was Dorothy , Lucille, Andrew, Johnny, and myself all decided to have church in the kitchen. We were singing "I Would Not Be Denied" to top of our voices when Uncle Ted came in and said "Hey what's all the racket about?" and we knew that he meant it was time for us to shut up and be quiet.
